Eastern Europe -Fedor Khitruk
The major Russian animator of the 1960s was Fedor Khitruk(Tver, 1 May 1917). Before becoming a director himself, Khitruk spent 24 years as an animator at Sujuzmultfilm. 'The animators's work demands enormous effort,' he said. 'When I became aware that my physical strength was diminishing...I became a director.' His first film, Histoty of a Crime(1961) had a neorealist flavour. Why does the quiet, reserved clerk kill a noisy little lady? In 1968, he directed Film Film Film an apt satire on filmmaking, from creation to directing, which annoyed Soviet bureaucracy. Khitruk was an expert, clever craftman who liked to keep up-to-date and concerned.
'modern topics require a modern acting style,' he said about his characters, adding 'I do not believe there is an art which does not deal with social problems; and everything which deals with man is, by itself, a social problem.'
